Knox Box Information

The Fire Department requires the installation of a Knox Box and/or gate key switch(es) at commercial buildings and certain multi-family residential properties, including some apartment buildings. The Knox Box provides emergency response personnel with secure access to building keys, allowing entry during an emergency without unnecessary damage to doors or windows and helping provide safer access for firefighters.
Key switches may also be required to provide emergency personnel with access to or control of designated areas, gates, or building systems.
Knox Boxes are generally not required for single-family homes. Homeowners who wish to install a Knox Box may submit a request; however, all residential Knox Box orders must be reviewed and approved by the Fire Marshal prior to release.
Please see our Fee Schedule for the Knox Box Administrative Fee assessed to Knox Box orders.
